Artist Statement
My practice starts from singular points of inspiration that grows to become a wider exploration into an aspect of human experience within a wider structure; of body, community or environment. My final pieces are then made with the purpose of prompting positive conversation around difficult subjects such as finding belonging, mental health and gender inequalities. I’m greatly inspired by classic theatre and literature and have enjoyed exploring how these cultural pillars both mirror and shape our societies and presenting this through my work. I consider my style to be representative of how I perceive the world as an Abject feminist and a documentation of my journey through life as I embrace my identity and the complexities which that entails as a young woman with a history of mental illness.
I’m a Multi-Media Artist that specialises in Oil Painting, Ceramics and Textiles. I consider the reclamation of the artforms, specifically needlework, that are typically associated with femininity and craft to be really important to my work and am enjoying taking these skills developed in the domestic setting and seeing the value they offer to contemporary art. I’ve found that these mediums, used in conjunction with each other, are the most rewarding for me in process and in communicating my ideas; their sculptural, tactile qualities allow me to breathe vitality and purpose into every motion and ground quite abstract concepts with their material relatability.
